Road Closure
Drivers in the City’s west end may need to allow themselves more travel time this morning due to a road closure. As of 7 am this morning, Korah Road north of Second Line West will be closed. Traffic will not be allowed to travel north onto Korah Road from Second Line West. Korah Road, south of Second Line West, will have only right and left turn lanes-nothing will be allowed to travel north at this intersection. Also Second Line West, west of Korah Road will be narrowed down to 2 lanes of traffic during this work. As of 7 am this morning Brunswick will be opened to assist with the traffic flow in the area.
Male Charged with Breach of a Release Document
Around 8:30 pm last night City Police arrested 23-year old Justin Day of 601 Douglas Street. Officers attended at a west end address at the request of a homeowner to remove the accused, who was no longer welcome at the residence. The accused was drinking at the time of the incident. A police query revealed that the accused was on a release order with conditions not to consume alcohol. The accused was charged with 1 count of breach of a release order and will appear in court on October 17th.
Male Turns Himself into the Police
Last evening 54-year old Lance Cartmill of 1692 Third Line West turned himself into City Police. On the 19th of August officers from the Joint Forces Drug Unit and the City Police attended at the Cartmill residence and executed a search warrant. Officers located approximately 65 grams of marijuana with a street value of approximately $1,300.00. Officer also seized 4 firearms unsafely stored as well as unsafely stored ammunition. Mr. Cartmill has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance and 5 counts of careless use or storage of firearm/ammunition. The accused will appear in court on October 17th.
Break and Enters
City Police received 2 break and enter reports early this morning. At 2 am a homeowner in the 300 block of Farwell Terrace reported their shed had been entered and a grey Ecco CCM 15 speed bike had been taken. Around the same time a homeowner in the 400 block of Parliament Street reported their garage had been entered and a child’s yellow CCM mountain bike was taken as well as a white adults CCM mountain bike. Vehicle Colllision
Yesterday afternoon shortly before 4 pm City Police attended at the intersection of St. Georges Avenue and Walnut Street. A pickup truck operated by 49-year old Wayne Cooper of 40 Kitchener Road was traveling southbound on Walnut Street and stopped for the stop sign. A pickup truck operated by 47-year old Gilles Chavin of 77 Chabot Crescent was traveling eastbound on St. Georges Avenue. It is alleged that the Cooper vehicle proceeded across St. Georges Avenue and collided with the Chavin vehicle. The Chavin vehicle then struck a tree. Damage to the Cooper truck was described as demolished and the damage to the Chavin truck was described as severe. Fortunately no one was injured in the incident. Mr. Cooper has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with one count of fail to yield to traffic on through highway.
Bears in the City
City Police and MNR officials were kept busy with a number of bear calls yesterday:
1) There was a report of a bear in the area of Third Line West and Moss Road yesterday morning just after 8 am.
2) Another call came in around 3 pm of a bear in the bush in the 800 block of Second Line East.
3) Around 12 noon a homeowner in the 100 block of Black Road reported a bear and 3 cubs in the area. A second call regarding the bears also came in around 6:30 pm in the same area. The MNR was notified and attended in the area.
4) Just after 5 pm a bear was spotted in the Placid Avenue area. The bear moved along to the Windsor and McNabb Street Area.
5) Right around the same time a homeowner in the 100 block of Fields Square reported a bear in a tree in their back yard. The MNR and City Police attended in the above areas and one bear was trapped.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and the MNR would like to remind homeowners to secure garbage, do not put bird food out in feeders and do not leave food lying around outside. If you see a bear report it. Stay away from the bear.
