TWO GIRLS HAVE MINOR INJURIES IN HIT-AND-RUN
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is requesting the public?s assistance with their investigation into a motor vehicle/pedestrian collision. On Tuesday morning at 11:50 am two teenage females were walking west on Queen Street across the crosswalk of Dennis Street. The females took approximately two steps into the crosswalk when a car that was northbound on Dennis Street struck them.

The driver of the car, a male in his late 70?s stopped momentarily and then left the scene northbound on Dennis Street. The driver was described as having grey/black hair and wearing glasses. The car involved is described as a reddish/maroon car, possibly a late 1980?s Volkswagen type. The females received minor injuries in the collision. Anyone having information on the driver or the vehicle involved in this incident is asked to contact the Traffic Section of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service at 949-6300.


MOTORIST HITS DEER ON 2nd LINE
At 2:30 this morning, Stephen Briglio, age 26 of 4492 Third Line West was driving his 2000 Volkswagen Jetta west on Second Line when he struck a deer that was crossing the roadway.

The collision occurred in the 1600 block of Second Line West when the deer decided to run south across Second Line and into the path of the car. Briglio was not injured in the collision but his vehicle received severe damage and was towed from the scene. The deer was killed.


BREAK & ENTERS
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service investigated two break-ins yesterday. At 6:54 am, patrol officers were called to the Cambrian Mall at 44 Great Northern Road where thieves had broken into Décor Art and an empty store. They made off with seven Samurai Swords.

In a second break and enter call a resident of a home in the 300 block of Goulais Avenue heard a bang a 2:53 this morning and then heard someone pushing his window. The thief was unable to gain entry and fled the area. A search could not locate the suspect. Police are requesting anyone with information on these occurrences to contact them at 949-6300 or Crime Stoppers.


CABBIE TURNS IN FARE
At 9:55 last evening, a cab driver was having trouble with his fare and drove him to the police services building on Second Line East. The passenger in the taxi, Daniel Biron, age 44 of 590 Northland Road would not pay his fare and became very upset.

Biron took out his anger on the passenger side window of the cab by smashing it. Patrol officers arrested and charged Biron with Fraud in Relation to Fares and Mischief under $5,000.00. He will appear in court on June 16th.


MOOSE IN CITY
At 5:30 this morning, patrol officers were called to the area of Great Northern Road and Laurentian Drive where two large moose were reported in a backyard. The moose were herded into the bush area north/west of the area without incident.


YOUTH CHARGED WITH ASSAULT
On May 13th at approximately 5:00 p.m., the accused, a 12-year-old male was at a park in the city?s downtown area when he assaulted four young persons with a syringe/needle type instrument. The four persons were stuck and scratched on either their shoulder or their hand.

The victims of this assault were eight, nine, eleven and twelve year old boys. The accused did further assaulted the eleven year old by pushing him on the ground and kicking him once in the right temple and twice on his left leg.

Efforts to locate the youth on May 13th were unsuccessful but yesterday at 10:12 pm, the youth surrendered himself to police. He has been charged with four counts of Assault with a Weapon and Assault.


POLICE WEEK GETS UNDERWAY
Yesterday morning at 11:00 am Chief Bob Davies of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service opened Police Week activities at a ceremony in Station Mall. Robert Morris of the 49th Field Regiment Pipes and Drums, piped the dignitaries of the various police agencies involved onto the stage in the centre court area.

Following the singing of the American and Canadian National Anthems by Jane Prpich and an opening prayer by Rev. Bruce McLeish, the RCMP Chaplain, Chief Davies welcomed the public and thanked the over 31 various community agencies present for participating in our city's police week celebrations.

Representation included our American counterparts with booths and displays from United States Immigration and Customs, the Michigan State Police, the Sault Sainte Marie Michigan Police Department and the Chippewa County Sheriffs Department.

Representation from the Canadian Law Enforcement sector included the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Customs and Revenue, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Transportation, the Batchawana First Nations Police, the Anishinbek Police Service and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

The remaining displays included community service agencies and law enforcement related agencies from Sault Ste. Marie and area.

The display booths, which are very interesting and informative, will be open Thursday and Friday of this week and the public is encouraged to go down to the mall and see the diverse displays and interact with the various agencies represented there.
