Stolen Vehicle Arrest

On July 9, 2014 at 6:11 a.m., city police received a call that a pickup truck had been stolen from a Motel parking lot on Pim Street.

While officers were on scene speaking to the vehicles owner and witnesses in the area, the truck in question was spotted a short distance away by a witness who had earlier observed the theft. Officers quickly attended and using witness information the male driver of the stolen vehicle was apprehended without incident a short distance from the vehicle in the Borron Avenue area.

Upon arrest and processing the male accused was found to be in possession of several items including car keys, a cell phone and credit cards that did not belong to him. Investigating officers were able to link the cell phone and credit cards to a theft from vehicle reported earlier in the morning from a vehicle that was parked in another Motel parking lot on Pim Street. The keys led officers to a Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen on July 4 from a driveway in the 700 block of Wellington Street East.

The accused Richard Nanchin, age 36 of Pim Street, has been charged with Theft of Motor Vehicle (x2) and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. He will be attending bail court this morning.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police would like to thank the public for their assistance in reporting this crime. As a result of information provided in this incident two stolen vehicles and personal property were recovered, and returned to their rightful owners.
