Reminders

Now that the Christmas Holidays are behind us and the cold of winter is settling in, many people are looking at heading to the sunny south to get away from Old Man Winter. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to offer the pubic the following tips to consider when getting ready for the trip away:

Before you go:

- Check to see if the area you want to visit is tourist friendly, check
for travel warnings.
- Get references from family and friends about the areas you plan to
visit.
- Make reservations with a reputable travel agent.
- Let someone you trust know your travel plans, and if there are any
changes inform them.
- Obtain travel insurance.

When traveling by car:

- Have your vehicle tuned up, including check the tire condition, fluid
levels and gas levels. Keep the tank full.
- Know where you are going, obtain current maps, use well lit roads, and
travel in well-lit areas.
- If you have car trouble, keep the doors and windows locked and stay
with the car until help arrives.

Airport travel safety:

- Pack light, don't put valuables in checked bags, constantly monitor
your bags - keep a 'hands on' approach.
- Don't carry all your cash or traveler’s cheques in one bag. Spread
them between your wallet, pockets and carry on luggage.
- If you can, keep important documents such as your passport, in an
inside shirt pocket.

Hotel safety:

- Check in discretely, if the clerk announces your room number, request
another room.
- Verify key procedures, don't leave keys lying around. Report lost keys
immediately and consider changing rooms.
- Place the 'do not disturb' sign on the door, when going out. It
creates the illusion that someone is inside.
- Don't allow hotel staff, service people, or any other visitors into
your room without confirming who they are with the front desk.
