Sault Police say a man lit the contents of a garbage can on fire inside a west-end residence — then prevented others from trying to put out the blaze.
The suspect and two other people sustained minor injuries, police say.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. on Nov. 7 in the 500 block of Queen Street West, sending police and firefighters to the scene.
“An investigation revealed the accused had lit the contents of a garbage can on fire in the living room in a residence shared with others and prevented them from putting out the fire,” says a news release issued this morning by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
Donald Bussineau, 33, was arrested and charged with one count of arson - disregard for human life.
He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on Jan. 20, 2025.
The allegation has not been tested in court and Bussineau is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
