Think you're cop fit? Here's a chance to find out

Sault Police are offering fitness test practice sessions for people thinking about a career with the force

Sault Police are offering four fitness test practice sessions this November for those thinking about a career in policing.

Sessions are scheduled for Nov. 20 at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Capacity is limited to 20 participants per session.

“The fitness test can seem intimidating, but this is a great opportunity to assess your current fitness level in a supportive and encouraging environment,” says Derek MacFarlane, sergeant of uniform recruitment, in a news release. “It’s a chance to try the test without the pressure of the real thing and see where you may need improvement.”

While the sessions are intended to be for learning and practice, those who pass the practice test may choose to use the results in their application to SSMPS for up to four months. Those who do not pass will receive constructive feedback on how to improve their fitness.

The fitness test practice sessions are part of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service's broader recruitment strategy. The service has been approved to hire 17 new officers over the next four years and, with several members becoming eligible for retirement soon, additional job openings are likely.
