Sault Police say a suspected truck thief ran from the cops early Friday morning — hopping fences and sprinting through multiple backyards — before officers eventually caught up and placed him under arrest.

The incident began at approximately 4 a.m. on Nov. 24, when officers patrolling Pentagon Boulevard noticed a pickup truck, which had been reported stolen two days earlier, parked in a driveway.

When police approached the vehicle, the suspect allegedly bolted.

“Officers pursued the accused on foot and, despite further physical resistance, arrested them in the 400 block of McNabb Street,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Further investigation revealed that the man was also a suspect in a Nov. 23 break-and-enter at a business in the 300 block of Lake Street, where property was damaged and a quantity of cash was stolen.

Joseph King, 38, is charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Break and Enter – Intent to Commit Indictable Offence
  • Mischief – Render Property Inoperative
  • Theft – Under $5,000
  • Operation While Prohibited

King was held in custody pending a bail hearing. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
