A suspected drunk driver was arrested at the border on Labour Day after Sault Police say a vehicle entered a closed lane — then reversed into a barrier.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) called police at around 9 p.m. on Sept. 2 to report the incident.

“The driver had pulled into a closed lane and, when told they needed to change lanes, reversed their vehicle into a barrier,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “Upon speaking with the driver, CBSA members developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by alcohol.”

Police say the suspect provided multiple breath samples, all of which were over the legal limit.

William Maloney is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Drug and/or Alcohol
  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80+)

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on Nov. 4, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Maloney is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
