Sault Police say they arrested a drunk driver at the scene of a serious car crash early Tuesday morning.

At around 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 12, a pickup truck collided with a car near Wellington Street West and Conmee Avenue.

“Officers were dispatched to the scene where they noticed significant damage was sustained by the entire car, as well as by the front of the truck,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

After speaking to the driver of the pickup truck, officers suspected he'd been drinking. Multiple breath samples registered above the legal limit, police say.

Benjamin Katajamaki, 31, is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Drug and/or Alcohol
  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80+)
  • Dangerous Operation

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on Dec. 9, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Katajamaki is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
