Critics of the so-called “catch and release” system have another case to add to their list of examples.

On July 25, Sault Police charged a 34-year-old man with multiple offences — including three counts of mischief and failing to comply with a probation order — after someone phoned 911 to report a person damaging property at three separate businesses in the 100 block of Churchill Boulevard.

The suspect was arrested but subsequently released after a bail hearing.

Two days later, on July 27, the same man was arrested again on more serious charges.

Sault Police say around 6:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to a theft at a business in the 200 block of Northern Avenue East. Security officers already had the suspect in custody.

“A search of the accused found them to be in possession of a loaded flare pen launcher, a can of chemical deterrent, and ammunition,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “It was also determined the accused had provided an incorrect identity to officers.”

Kenneth Fisher is charged with:

  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose x2
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x2
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Fisher is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
