An investigation in the west end remains ongoing this afternoon after residents in the Douglas Street area awoke to the alarming sounds of gunfire overnight.

According to Sault Police, an individual fired off a number of gunshots while walking down a residential street at around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

Officers arrived to the scene shortly after, but they were unable to identify a suspect. It is currently unknown whether the incident was targeted or random.

“We’re trying to determine exactly what took place there,” a Sault Police spokesperson said. “We’re looking at seeing if we have anyone who has identified anything on their video and doing the canvas as well. Investigative services are certainly following up with any leads they have.”

No injuries or damages to homes or vehicles have been reported at this time.

We will update this story as soon as more information becomes available.
