Police say they have laid assault charges after a woman is alleged to have spat on an employee of a downtown business and pulled the hair of security guards who intervened.

Police say at around 6 p.m. on Aug. 28 they received a 911 call about two people refusing to leave a business in the 200 block of Bay Street.

One of the two "assaulted an employee by using slurs and spitting on them. When security officers brought the accused into custody, the accused pulled their hair and scratched them," Sault Ste. Marie Police said in a news release.

Police were dispatched to the business where the woman had already been taken into custody by security, police said.

The other person had left without incident, according to police.

Janet Hodgson, 35, was arrested and charged with assault.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
