Suspect arrested for downtown window-smashing spree

46-year-old was located and charged early this morning after multiple businesses were targeted over Thanksgiving weekend

Sault Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a string of downtown window smashings over Thanksgiving weekend.

As SooToday first reported, police were called to various businesses in the core on Saturday and Sunday to investigate reports of broken windows. 

“One business in the 600 block of Queen Street East, two businesses in the 700 block of Queen Street East, and one business in the 100 block of East Street sustained property damage,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “Property was also taken from one of the businesses.”

Police say they located the suspect early this morning, around 3 a.m., in the 700 block of Wellington Street East. 

“Further investigation also placed the accused at a break and enter which took place on January 7, 2024, at a residence in the 0-100 block of George Street,” the news release states.

Charles Walton, 46, is charged with:

  • Break and Enter a Place – Commit Indictable Offence x2
  • Break and Enter a Place – Intent to Commit Indictable Offence
  • Break and Enter a Dwelling House – Commit Indictable Offence
  • Mischief – Under $5,000 x2
  • Theft – Under $5,000

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Walton is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
