Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating a shooting death involving a 19-year-old locally that occurred early Sunday morning.
In a release issued by the SIU, preliminary information says that Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officers were dispatched to a residence on the north end of Pine Street at approximately 3:41 a.m. Sunday.
Shortly after 4 a.m., "an officer was shot and officers discharged their firearms at the man," the SIU release says.
The man was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer that was shot was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
