A wanted man who allegedly beat a person with a metal pipe two months ago has been found and arrested.

Sault Police say the attack occurred on Sept. 2 in the 200 block of Albert Street East.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, but police say the assailant fled the scene by the time officers arrived. An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect.

Sault Police say the man was located yesterday and taken into custody.

Sydney Benwell, 30, is charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Assault With a Weapon
  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order x4
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order

The accused is being held pending a bail hearing. None of the allegations have been tested in court and Benwell is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

On Aug. 2, one month before the pipe attack, Benwell was arrested and charged with robbing the same person twice — once at gunpoint. That case remains active.
