Search for 45-year-old missing snowmobiler continues

The search for a 45-year-old man who who went through the ice last night continues.

Fire officials say firefighters launched an airboat around 10:47 p.m. and located a helmet near a hole in the ice.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter joined the search at 1 a.m. and searched the area until 2 a.m. Firefighters left the scene at 2:23 a.m.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says search and rescue efforts continue today with assistance from Ontario Provincial Police.

Fire officials said U.S. police services conducted searches on the Michigan side of the St. Mary's River.

Update snowmobile search and rescue

The search for a missing snowmobiler that began last night continues.

Initial air, land and water searches, as well as investigation into this event, have revealed that a 45-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man travelling by snowmobile on the St. Mary’s River entered the water in the river a short distance east of Point Aux Pins Drive.

The search and rescue efforts will continue today with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police.
