Sault Police trying to track down a lost piece of history

Local police force wants to talk to anyone who may have an old Korah Township Police Badge from the 1960s

If you have a certain piece of local police history, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service wants to talk to you about it.

Sault Police are looking to find a Korah Township Police Badge.

On Jan. 1, 1965, Tarentorus Township Police Department and Korah Township Police Force amalgamated into what was then called the Sault Ste. Marie Police Force.

Sault Police are looking to honour that piece of history by finding the missing piece of its plaque, which is a Korah Township Police badge.

“As an organization we are proud of our origins,” says Hugh Stevenson, Chief of Police. “We do not have many artifacts from before the amalgamation. We want to display all three of the uniform crests, along with the badges of each police organization, as a tribute to the members of the three agencies.”

Although many historical items belonging to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are on display at the local museum, this plaque is showcased inside the Police Services Building.

Police are asking anyone who may have had a family member who was a member of Korah Township Police, collect policing memorabilia, or are part of a family who lived in Korah Township in the 1960s or before to see if they have the badge.

If you do — and are willing to donate it to the Sault Police — you can contact Lincoln Louttit, manager of corporate communications, by email or at 705-949-6300.
