Sault police charge 20-year-old with attempted murder

Police say altercation ensued after property was allegedly stolen from a car

A 20-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after Sault police responded overnight to an argument involving property that was allegedly stolen.

According to a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, the victim confronted a person trying to steal property from a vehicle on Princeton Drive around midnight on May 10. An argument ensued, police say, and the victim was kicked, punched and cut with a knife several times. 

The two people were known to each other, police say.

"When officers arrived the victim and the accused were in the front yard of a residence," the news release says. "Officers could see the victim had injuries to their face, as well as cuts to their hands, chest, and head. The victim was transported to hospital to receive medical treatment."

During a search of the accused, police say they found stolen property, including bank cards.

Jules Rice is charged with:

  • Attempt to commit murder
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Aggravated assault
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Probation order: non-compliance x3

The suspect is being held in custody pending a bail hearing. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
