One person is facing charges after a bear spray incident last week in Sault Ste. Marie.

At around 9 p.m. on June 19, someone phoned 911 to report a person spraying another person with bear spray in the 0-100 block of East Street.

Sault Ste. Marie Police say the accused and victim, who suffered minor injuries, are known to one another.

On Saturday, officers patrolling Wellington Street East spotted a person riding a bicycle without a light.

“The cyclist was identified as the accused, and they were arrested on the strength of a warrant,” Sault Police said in a news release.

Cory Cloutier, 31, is charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Administering a noxious thing
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon contrary to a prohibition order
  • Failing to comply with a probation order

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
