A 34-year-old man is facing charges after officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police service recognized the individual while on patrol earlier this week.

On Tuesday around 9 p.m., officers were patrolling the area of Albert Street East and Brock Street when they saw the accused.

When the officers approached him, police say the accused fled through an alley.

The officers then caught up to the individual and arrested him.

Police say a search of the accused found a utility knife and a realistic replica firearm was found in the alley, which the accused dropped while fleeing from the officers.

Kristiani Mattila has been charged with:

  • careless use of firearm
  • failure to comply with appearance notice
  • failure to comply with probation order (x2)
  • possession of firearm contrary to prohibition order (x4)
  • possession of imitation weapon for dangerous purpose

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Mattila is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
