Sault police have located a 40-year-old driver who allegedly sped away from officers who tried to pull him over last month.

On July 30, patrol officers observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed through a red light at the intersection of Wallace Terrace and Korah Road.

"The driver sped away from police through business areas and suburbs, endangering patrons and pedestrians, before pulling into a driveway and fleeing on foot," says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. "Officers were unable to locate the driver at that time and a warrant was sought."

A week later, on Aug. 8, police say the same driver was pulled over again on Douglas Street and placed under arrest.

Harry Challenger is charged with:

  • dangerous operation
  • fail to stop (under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • red light – fail to stop (under the Highway Traffic Act)

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on Oct. 23, 2023.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Challenger is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
