Police seize $49K in narcotics following firearm call

Two face drug trafficking charges after police seized $49,000 in narcotics in an incident that occurred early this morning, Sault Ste. Marie Police said in a news release issued today.

Police say they responded to a call around 3 a.m. of a man who had a firearm on Grace Street. 

Upon arrival, police say they saw two people running in the area. Officers stopped the men and upon investigating, located approximately 99g of suspected fentanyl. 

As a result, the two men were arrested and face charges (listed below).

On March 24, 2022, officers with Patrol Services and the Drug Enforcement Unit charged 20-year-old Anthony Koehler and 21-year-old Turuk Thomas, both of Kitchener, Ontario, with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Around 3 a.m. officers received a call of a man in possession of a firearm on Grace Street. Upon arrival officers observed two men running in the area. Officers caught up to the two men and placed them under investigative detention.

The Canine Unit was called out and a subsequent search by Police Service Dog Hektor assisted in locating approximately 99 grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl in the area. The estimated street value of the narcotics seized is $49,000. Officers identified the two accused and they were arrested.

Mr. Koehler is charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

Mr. Thomas is charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.  

Officers remain in the area as the investigation is ongoing.
