A man is facing a long list of charges — including impaired driving, dangerous operation and possession of cocaine — after a serious collision Friday morning at the corner of Black Road and Second Line East.

Sault Police were dispatched to the intersection at around 11 a.m. on Sept. 27 after a car collided with a transport truck.

The truck driver was not injured, but the driver of the car — which “sustained significant damage” — was transported to hospital with minor physical injuries.

“An investigation revealed the accused was driving the car at a high rate of speed when they drove through a red light and struck the transport truck,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “A search of the accused located approximately 14 grams of suspected cocaine.”

Arrested at the hospital, 47-year-old Gregory Belleau is charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation
  • Operation While Impaired – Drug and/or Alcohol
  • Possession of Schedule I Substance
  • Red Light – Fail to Stop (Under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • Drive Motor Vehicle, No Currently Validated Permit (Under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • Owner Operate Motor Vehicle on a Highway – No Insurance (Under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act)

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on Oct. 21, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Belleau is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
