Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service charged a 44-year-old woman with impaired driving at around 10:30 p.m. last night.

Police say officers on patrol saw a running vehicle in a parking lot on Bay Street that had its driver side door open and the driver asleep at the wheel.

Officers woke the driver and developed grounds to believe her ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drugs after speaking with her.

They conducted a sobriety test, which they said the accused failed. The individual was arrested and transported to hospital for blood testing.

According to a news release, a search of her vehicle located approximately 0.55 grams of suspected fentanyl and roughly 0.70 grams of suspected cocaine.

Police charged Melanie Tomatuk with operation while impaired – drug and/or alcohol, and possession of schedule 1 substance.

She was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 16.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Tomatuk is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
