Sault Police say a local adult chased down a teenager who knocked over their basketball net — and pinned them against a building with their vehicle.

The investigation began at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Oct. 5, when officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Wellington Street West for a report “of a youth pinned against a building by a vehicle.”

By the time police arrived, the driver had left.

“An investigation revealed the victim, who is a youth, knocked over the accused’s basketball net while walking home,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “The accused then exited their residence and chased them with what appeared to be a pipe while verbally threatening them. The youth ran away but the accused chased them in a vehicle and used it to pin them against a building.”

The teenager appeared to have sustained minor physical injuries, police say, and was transported to hospital. The victim and accused were not known to one another.

Police say the suspect was arrested at their residence.

Rayanne Cote, 33, is charged with:

  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Uttering Threats

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on Dec. 16, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Cote is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
