On Sunday, a shooting occurred on the property of the Community Resource Centre and Men’s Shelter at 721 Wellington St. at around 7 p.m.
Police said the victim was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
"Detectives with Investigation Services are currently investigating and believe this is an isolated incident, as the victim and the suspect are believed to be known to each other," a news release said.
"Members of the Emergency Services Unit are currently conducting a search for evidence from Wellington Street East to East Street. There will be an increased police presence as the search is underway."
At around 8:30 p.m., a SooToday reporter spotted police outside an apartment building at 70 East St. With weapons drawn and a dog from the canine unit accompanying them, the officers entered the building.
The CRC is closed today while police investigate.
“While we are treating this incident as a serious occurrence, we can confirm that no shelter staff or shelter clients were harmed,” said Annette Katajamaki, CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association Algoma, in a news release.
"To support Sault Ste. Marie Police in their investigation, we have made the decision to close the CRC to the public today.”
The organizations that work out of the CRC remain committed to the safety and security of staff and shelter guests, and “we will continue our work to provide a safe and welcoming environment for those in need,” the release said.
