Police clear fatal shooting scene, vehicles can be picked up

Yellow tape went up around a west-end parking lot Saturday night following a police-involved shooting

People who lost access to vehicles parked in the Westside Plaza area during this weekend's fatal police shooting investigation can now go and pick them up.

Sault Police say they are no longer holding the scene on Second Line West near Peoples Road.

Police tape went up around the parking lot Saturday night following a police-involved shooting.

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), says the incident began at a Circle K variety store in the west-end, where Sault Police were dispatched to respond to a disturbance call at around 10:30 p.m.

“Officers encountered a 37-year-old man in the vicinity of the store and offered to transport him to another location,” says a news release issued Sunday by the SIU.

Later in the evening, police had a second encounter with the man at the Westside Plaza.

“When the officers searched the man, they located a handgun," the SIU says. "An interaction ensued, and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck.”

The man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead after being transported to hospital.

“During the early stages of the investigation, officers secured the scene, which included a number of vehicles parked in the area,” said Sault Police in a Sunday night news release.

“With the scene now clear, anyone who has a vehicle in the area can now go get their vehicle and drive it home.”

911 communicators will continue to try and contact affected vehicle owners.
