A 30-year-old was arrested early this morning for allegedly spraying bear mace during a bizarre altercation at a multi-unit residence in the Sault.

The incident began at around 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 22, when someone phoned 911 to report a number of people attempting to break into a unit in the building.

Sault Police say they quickly realized it wasn’t a break-in. Instead, they say other residents in the building were actually carrying furniture into another unit in the building.

The investigation also revealed that the suspect had “sprayed bear mace under the door, causing one victim minor physical injuries” that required a visit to the hospital.

Eight days later, at around 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 30, officers went back to the building and arrested the suspect.

Rilee Bychko is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and administering a noxious thing.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on Nov. 4, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Bychko is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
