One charged after search warrant leads to sawed-off shotgun

Sault Ste. Marie Police say they located a sawed-off shotgun and nine rounds of ammunition while executing a search warrant in the 400 block of Douglas Street on Nov. 7, 2024.

One person is facing charges after Sault Ste. Marie Police say they found a sawed-off shotgun while executing a search warrant in early November.

On Nov. 7, 2023, detectives conducted the search in the 400 block of Douglas Street in relation to a firearms investigation.

Police say they also found nine rounds of ammunition.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect, who they apprehended Monday in the 700 block of Second Line West.

Nicholas Binda, 35, has been charged with:

  • Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device, or Ammunition x3
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm x2
  • Possession of Firearm Knowing Serial Number Has Been Tampered With
  • Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose x2
  • Unauthorized Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm x2
  • Unauthorized Possession of Weapon x2
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order – Other Than to Attend Court x3

The suspect was held in custody pending a bail hearing and has since been remanded.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
