One arrested after stolen vehicle sold for scrap metal

Vehicle was reported stolen from the 500 block of Dundas Street last November — then sold for scrap for $480, police allege

One person is facing charges after a vehicle was towed away and then sold for scrap metal.

The vehicle was reported stolen from the 500 block of Dundas Street nearly a year ago, on Nov. 19, 2023.

Sault Ste. Marie Police allege the suspect received $480 for the vehicle.

An arrest warrant was issued, but the suspect was not located until Monday in the 0-100 block of Churchill Avenue.

Jean-Paul Leonard, 65, is charged with:

  • Fraud – Under $5,000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Under $5,000

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on Nov. 25, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Leonard is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
