Mac's Robbed at Knifepoint
Just after 4:30 am this morning a lone male attended at the Mac’s Convenience Store located on Second Line West and robbed the store at knifepoint. The male fled from the store with an undisclosed amount of money. The store clerk was not harmed in the incident. The male suspect is described as possibly being white, thin build and approximately six feet tall. The male was wearing a blue shirt with white stripes and a blue ski mask. He fled the store on a red bicycle. Anyone with any information regarding this robbery is asked to contact the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service at 949-6300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Two persons will appear in bail court this morning:
1) 25-year old Justin Lewis of 58 Gibbs Street turned himself into City Police last evening on an outstanding warrant. He had been wanted for one count of being unlawfully at large and was also charged with one count of breach of probation for failing to keep the peace and be good.
2) A 14-year old youth was arrested on the 9th of September and charged with one count of mischief under $5,000 and three counts of breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). It is alleged that just after 9 pm on the 9th, the youth threw a piece of metal and struck a City Transit bus causing damage to the side of the bus. At the time of the offence the accused was on probation with a number of conditions including a curfew of 9 pm to 7 am and to keep the peace and be good.
City Police arrested two persons that were involved in motor vehicle collisions for drinking and driving related offences:
1) On the 9th of September around 10:15 pm it is alleged that 46-year old Robert Nadjiwon of 573 Gran Street, Rankin Reserve was driving a pickup truck southbound on Great Northern Road when he started to turn left (eastbound) onto Third Line East and struck a van that was traveling northbound on Great Northern Road. The van then rotated and struck a car. Nadjiwon as well as the 38-year old male driver of the van, the 43-year old female driver of the car and a passenger from the van were all taken to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The van and the truck were severely damaged and the car received light damage. Nadjiwon has been charged with one count of impaired driving and will appear in court on October 16th.
2) On the 10th of September just before 11 pm 75-year old male in a pickup truck was stopping to enter a driveway on Goulais Avenue near Douglas Street. A van operated by 20-year old John Harris of 138 Spadina Avenue was allegedly traveling southbound on Goulais Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck the drivers side of the pickup truck and continued along Goulais Avenue. The van then turned east onto Douglas Street at a high rate of speed and proceeded over a curb, onto a sidewalk and struck a Bell Canada pole, crossed over Douglas Street and came to a stop when it hit a P.U.C. pole. The passenger in the Harris vehicle was taken to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Harris has been charged with one count of consume over the legal limit and one count of impaired driving causing bodily harm. He will appear in court on October 16th.
One Count of Break & Enter and Commit an Indictable Offence
40-year old Gordan Leonord of 28 Hughes Street was arrested on the 9th of September and charged with one count of break and enter and commit an indictable offence. It is alleged that between the 14th and 15th of November 2003 the accused broke into an office in the 100 block of East Street. Nothing was taken in the break and enter. The accused will appear in court on October 16th.
Break & Enters
City Police received a number of break and enter reports over the weekend:
1) On the 8th of September in the afternoon a home in the 100 block on Wallace Terrace was entered and a cell phone, digital camera, a duffle bag and approximately 60 DVD’s were taken.
2) Sometime between the 2nd of September and the 9th of September a home on Pim Street was entered and some furniture was taken including a bed and a kitchen table.
3) Sometime between the 9th of September just before midnight and the 10th of September just after midnight thieves broke into Sir James Dunn High School located on Wellington Street East and stole 4 computer hard drives.
4) Sometime between the 8th of September and the 9th of September a garage on Alworth Place was entered and items were taken from a vehicle in the garage.
The following calls were received regarding sightings of bears over the weekend:
1) On the 9th of September just after 8 pm a bear was seen on Anderson Road.
2) On the 10th of September around 5 pm a bear was in near a garage in the 500 block of Old Goulais Bay Road but went back into the bush area.
3) On the 10th of September just before 9 pm a bear was seen in the area of Old Garden River Road and Terrance Avenue.
4) On the 11th of September just after 2 am a bear was seen in the area of McNabb Street between Clearview Drive and Grove Crescent.
