Arson Investigation Update – Charges
Earlier Release:

A 38 year-old male is currently in custody and facing numerous charges in relation to an overnight domestic related incident that involved a fire at the apartment complex at 385 Cathcart Street. The Sault Ste. Marie Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the six-unit building at 1:16 am this morning. Residents were evacuated and there are no injuries to report. Police remain at the scene, the investigation is ongoing and there are no further details to be released at this time.

Charges:
The male involved in this incident, is 38 years of age. He has been charged with one count of arson in relation to the fire he allegedly set at the residence of his ex-girlfriend on the 1st of October at approximately 1:16 am. He was also wanted on outstanding warrants for previous domestic related incidents involving the same victim and was further charged with one count of threaten death or bodily harm, one count of break, enter and commit, two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of assault. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

Further Domestic Related Arrests
Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested a 46 year-old male was arrested on the 1st of October at 10:05 pm at his residence and charged with one count of assault and one count of threaten death or bodily harm. It is alleged that on this date he attended at his girlfriend’s residence assaulted her and threatened to kill her. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested a 41 year-old male in the downtown area last evening and charged him with one count of mischief and one count of breach of a release document. It is alleged that on the evening of the 3rd of October the accused attended at the residence of his ex-girlfriend on two occasions, kicked in the front door, damaging it and the frame. At the time of the incident the accused was breaching his curfew release conditions. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

Male Arrested for Aggravated Assault
Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 21 year-old John McGaughey of 75 Arden Street last evening after he turned himself in at the police station. He was wanted on an outstanding warrant for an incident that occurred in the early morning hours of the 2nd of October in the area of Goulais Avenue and McKenzie Street when he allegedly got into a dispute with a male known to him and assaulted him with a machete. The 24 year-old male victim received serious injuries to one of his hands that required surgery. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

Female Arrested for Assault
Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 34 year-old Valerie Szalai of 580 Charles Street yesterday afternoon at Riverview Centre and charged her with one count of assault. It is alleged that she assaulted a staff member at the centre yesterday afternoon. She is to appear in court on the 1st of November.

Shoplifting Related Arrests
Officers with the Sault Ste Marie Police Service arrested 40 year-old Alain Chartrand of 352 Cathcart Street (main) on the 1st of October at 10:30 am at Zellers on Bay Street after he allegedly attended at the store and stole several items on that date. He has been charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of breach of probation. At the time of the offence he was on probation conditions to keep the peace and be good. He is to attend in bail court this morning.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 77 year-old Kathleen Black on the 2nd of October at Joe No Frills Grocery Store on Korah Road after she allegedly attended at the store on that date and stole several items from the store. She has been charged with one county of theft under $5,000 and is to appear in court on the 1st of November.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 56 year-old Jacqueline Brown of #4-219 Wellington Street East and charged her with one count of fraud. It is alleged that she attended at Wal Mart on the 1st of October at approximately 10:00 am, removed original price tags from two sweaters, placed lower price tags on them and purchased them. She was apprehended by store security when leaving the store and held for police. She is to attend in court on the 1st of November.

Robbery Investigation
On the 1st of October at 3:38 pm the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended at a residence on St. Georges Avenue and took a robbery complaint from a male. The victim reported that an unknown male attended at his residence around 3 pm, knocked on his door and when the complainant answered it, the male forced his way in and demanded he give him his pills. The suspect allegedly punched the victim several times and stated he had a knife. The victim gave the suspect a bottle of prescription medication and he left the residence. No weapon was observed and there were no injuries reported. The suspect is described as: White Male, mid 20’s, 6’ tall, medium build, tattoos on neck and forearm, wearing dark sunglasses, a toque, hoodie, boots, jeans-all black in colour.

Break and Enters
• Parkland School was broken into last Thursday night. Unknown if anything was taken. Damage was reported to the interior of the school.
• An apartment in the 100 block of Cambridge Place was entered – electronics were reported stolen.
