The Sault Ste Marie City Police is currently investigating 2 robberies that occurred over the weekend:
On October 31st shortly after 7 pm the Beaver Gas Bar on Korah Road was robbed. The clerk and the suspect were the only persons in the store. The male advised the clerk he had a weapon and that he needed the money from the till. The male was given an undisclosed amount of money. The clerk was not harmed. In addition to the money the male also left with a plain white plastic bag containing a large bag of Lay’s bbq chips and a Snicker chocolate bar. The male is described as being 5’6” to 5’8” tall, very slim build, approximately 140 to 160 pounds, and was wearing a black ¾ length nylon hoody which had a small red label on the front of it, as well as 2 slash front pockets. He was wearing black baggy wind pants, white sports socks, and black sport sandals. He had a very narrow face, was clean shaven, had brown eyes, and his hair was described as being dark, medium length and very curly. This matter is currently under investigation by officers from the Investigation Services Section of the City Police. Halloween Looters

Last evening around 8:45 pm 2 youths were walking along Goulais Avenue in the area of Korah C&VS when they were robbed of their Halloween candy. The suspects threatened the victims and the candy was handed over with no one being hurt. 2 males and a female were the culprits. All 3 are around 16 years of age; the female was wearing a white jacket and a blue hoody, one of the males had a black hoody and was wearing round-framed glasses, and the third male was wearing a grey sweater/hoody.



Mischief

A number of acts of mischief were reported on the 30th and 31st. 12 calls were received from car owners at addresses all across the City advising their vehicle windows had been smashed. The majority was reported during the daytime hours of the 30th. One vehicle was also reported to have been spray painted early last night. There were also 3 reports of eggs being thrown on Saturday night and one report of a pumpkin being smashed.

Driver Hits Pole

On Saturday evening around 6:30 pm a pickup truck driven by a 42-year old male struck a PUC pole on Queen Street East near Riverside Drive. No injuries were sustained in the accident and not charges were laid. It is believed that accident may have occurred due to a medical condition. The accident is still under investigation by officers from the Traffic Services Section.

Accident Leads To Charges

On Saturday evening shortly before 9 pm City Police attended another accident with injuries also involving an impaired driver. It is alleged that a car driven by 34-year old Sharon Chamings of 937 Peoples Road drove into the back end of a car that was being operated by 42-year old William Taylor of 166 Glen Avenue. Mr. Taylor had slowed down in the 400 block of Albert Street East as a car in front of him was slowing down. Mr. Taylor and his passenger later drove themselves to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Ms. Chamings was found to have the smell of alcohol on her breath and was charged with one count of consume over the legal limit. She will appear in court on December 6th.

Attempted Break In

A 16-year old youth will appear in bail court this morning after being arrested on the 30th around 11 am. The youth attended at an address in the 100 block of Leo Avenue in the company of 19 –year old Lance Wabigwan of 147 Biggings Avenue. The two of them attempted to break in to the home but fled the scene. A witness provided a description of them and they were arrested a short distance away. Entry was not gained. Mr. Wabigwan was charged with one count of attempt break and enter and will appear in court on November 29th. When the youth provided a false name to the officers when arrested but was recognized by officers. The accused was on probation at the time of the attempt break and enter with terms to keep the peace and be good. A check also revealed the youth was wanted on warrants for failing to appear in court. The youth has been charged with one count of attempt break and enter, one count of personation, one count of breach of probation as well as one count of fail to attend court.

Outstanding Warrants Lead To Arrest

24-year old Ryan Point of no fixed address was arrested on the 30th of October on outstanding warrants. Mr. Point was wanted for one count of breach of probation, one count of fail to appear in court and one count of unauthorized possess of a weapon. The warrants stem from incidents in June and August of this year. Mr. Point will appear in bail court this morning.

Assault Charges

Yesterday afternoon shortly before 5 pm City Police attended at an address in the downtown area for a domestic dispute. A 31-year old male had just assaulted his girlfriend by punching her in the face. The accused was arrested a short distance from the address. A check of the accused confirmed that he was wanted for additional charges from the 26th of October related to the same female. On that date it is alleged the male entered the victim’s home without her permission and was bothering her. At the time of these offences the accused was on 2 probation orders with terms not to molest, harass and annoy the victim and to keep the peace and be good. The male will appear in bail court this morning after being charged with 3 counts of breach of probation, one count of assault, and one count of unlawfully in a dwelling house.

Break & Enter

On the 30th of October around 5 am a home in the 100 block of Anna Street was entered. The homeowner immediately called City Police. Upon police arrival the accused was walking from the front entrance and down the driveway. 18-year old Dustyn Elie of 152 Highway 563 Batchewana Bay, Ontario has been charged with one count of break and enter. He will appear in court on December 6th. Nothing appears to have been taken from the break in.

Impaired Driving Charges

On Saturday evening around 7:30 pm City Police attended at the intersection of Wallace Terrace and Korah Road for an accident with injuries. It is alleged that a car driven by 75-year old Morley Ostertag of 70 Tuckett Street was traveling eastbound on Wallace Terrace and turned left onto Korah Road in front of a van being driven by 42-year old Arnold Ross of 536 Goulais Avenue. 2 passengers in the Ross vehicle were taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Ostertag has been charged criminally with one count of impaired driving and one count of consume over the legal limit. He has also been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with one count of left turn-fail to afford reasonable opportunity to avoid collision.
