Male Charged with Assault
A 44-year old male will appear in bail court this morning after being arrested shortly after 3 am on the 19th of February. It is alleged that the male got into an argument with his common-law wife in their east end residence. The argument escalated and it is alleged that the male assaulted the female by striking her in the face and head area. The female received some minor injuries to her face but did not require medical treatment at the time. The male has been charged with one count of assault.
Possession Charges Laid
On Friday afternoon officers from Investigation Services attended at 29 Hughes Street in regards to a complaint they were investigating. When officers attended in the home they observed 20 marihuana plants growing in the residence as well as various pieces of equipment used to grow the plants. Officers from the Joint Forces Drug Unit were called in to assist at the address. In addition to the plants officers also seized 25 grams of marihuana. Street value of the narcotics is estimated at $10,506.00. 35-year old Wallace Steeves of 29 Hughes Street has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance and one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled drug or substance. The accused will appear in court on March 21st.
Shoplifting Charges Laid
On Friday afternoon City Police attended at the Sears Store in the Station Mall for a shoplifter. It is alleged that 19-year old Mark Pine of 1546 Highway 17 East, Garden River, left the store with an MP3 player concealed in his pocket. He was apprehended by store security. The accused was on a release document at the time with conditions to stay away from the Station Mall. The accused has been charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of breach of a release document. He will appear in court on March 21st.
Impaired Charges
On Friday night just before midnight the driving actions of an individual caught the attention of the police. It is alleged that the accused drove his car into a snow bank on Russ Ramsey Way, continued along Brock Street and then onto Queen Street nearly striking some parked cars. The car was stopped by Bruce Street. The driver displayed signs of impairment. 36-year old Richard LeBlanc of 26 Broadview Drive has been charged with one count of impaired driving and one count of consume over the legal limit. He will appear in court on March 21st.
Female Charged with Causing a Disturbance
On the 19th of February around 2 am City Police were called to the Sault Ste. Marie Casino after security called them regarding a problem with a female patron. The female was asked to leave due to being intoxicated and would not leave. As a result the female was charged with one count of cause a disturbance by being drunk. Tracy Rose, age 32, of Hanmer, Ontario will appear in court on March 21st.
Fraud Charges Laid
Officers from the Investigation Services Section have completed their investigation in a fraud complaint involving an employee from the Waabinong Head Start Family Resource Center at 169 Spring Street. It is alleged that between April of 2001 and March of 2004, 49-year old Margaret Wabegijig of Elliot Lake depositing funds into her personnel bank account which belonged to Waabinong Head Start. The monetary value involved is over $76,000. The accused has been charged with one count of theft by person required to account and one count of fraud over $5,000. The accused will appear in court on March 21st.
Break and Enters
City Police responded to a number of breaks and enters over the weekend. On the 19th, 3 homeowners in the 100 block of Terry Fox Place reported their residences entered overnight. Items taken include cigarettes, a small amount of money, a wallet and a digital camera. Thieves broke into a garage around 1:30 am on the 20th and were scared off when a car alarm sounded. The thieves left empty handed. This occurred in the 500 block of John Street. And on the 20th a homeowner in the 200 block of Glasgow Avenue reported a shed broken into but it is unknown at this time what was taken.
