The police watchdog for Ontario has launched an investigation after a man stabbed himself while members of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service were responding to a domestic violence incident last week.

In an email to SooToday, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Sault Police received a 911 call in relation to a domestic violence incident at a residence in the Broadview Gardens area at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 17.

"Police responded and the man involved in the incident stabbed himself with a knife," the spokesperson said.

The man was arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

As previously reported by SooToday, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently being investigated by the SIU over a pair of custody injuries that occurred earlier this year.

The SIU investigates incidents resulting in serious injury, death, allegations of sexual assault and discharge of a firearm by an officer at a person. The agency has jurisdiction over all municipal, regional and provincial police officers in Ontario.
