A 39-year-old faces multiple charges stemming from an incident that took place late last week.
In a news release issued today, Sault Ste. Marie police say officers responded to a call around 7 a.m. on Dec. 13 of someone pointing a firearm at a driver of a snow removal service outside a residence on Alexandra Street. Officers went to the residence where they located and arrested the accused.
Police say the accused had approached the snow removal vehicle and began hitting it with a shovel before opening the door and attempting to strike the driver with the shovel. Once the victim was able to get the accused out of the vehicle and lock the door, the accused took a firearm out of their bag and pointed it at the victim.
The victim drove away and did not sustain any physical injuries.
As a result, Derek Meyers-Lewis was charged with:
- Assault with a Weapon
- Careless Use of Firearm
- Carrying Concealed Weapon
- Pointing a Firearm
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and Meyers-Lewis is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
