Missing Person

Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Investigation Services Section are asking the public for any information on the whereabouts of William Matthew Cardiff, age 35. Friends and family have not seen Mr. Cardiff since August 26th. A family member last spoke to Mr. Cardiff on August 27th.

Mr. Cardiff is a white male, age 35, 5’8” tall, 145 pounds, has short brown hair, bright blue eyes and has a poor complexion.

Family members and City Police have been unable to locate the missing person. Attempts to contact him via a cell phone have been unsuccessful. The missing person does not have access to a vehicle. This is unusual behaviour for William Cardiff.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the City Police at 949-6300.


Numerous Charges

Yesterday afternoon City Police apprehended 22-year-old Raymond Gregoire of 217 Beverly Street in the downtown area. It is alleged that around 1:40 pm yesterday the accused was observed entering vehicles in the downtown area near Etienne Brule School. While entering the vehicles it is alleged that the accused covered his face with a hood. When officers attended in the area, the accused fled on foot and was chased by officers but Gregoire managed to get away.

Officers checked around several addresses but were unable to locate the accused. When they re-attended in the area of Etienne Brule School they received information that the accused had allegedly broken into the school and stole a wallet. Around 3 pm Gord Royle Insurance on March Street reported that a male had stolen a wallet from a purse in their office area. The description matched Mr. Gregoire. Just after 4 pm a patrol officer spotted Mr. Gregoire on Queen Street East by the Memorial Gardens and other officers also attended in the area to contain the location. While evading the patrol officers and officers from Investigation Services, it is further alleged that

Mr. Gregoire ran into an occupied home in the 100 block of Dennis Street in an attempt to hide from the officers. When the homeowner went into their basement the accused ran out of the house. No one was hurt in this incident.

Due to the great team work by officers in the area who were containing the downtown area where Mr. Gregoire was running and trying to hide from the officers, the K-9 Unit became involved and at 6:40 pm the accused was located with the assistance of Tazer and taken into custody.

Mr. Gregoire has been charged with three counts of break and enter and commit an indictable offence, one count of attempt theft and one count of disguise with intent. The accused was on releases documents with conditions to reside at a specific address, to remain in his residence daily except for employment purposes, medical emergencies or to obtain groceries and to reside at a specific address. The accused was also wanted on a warrant for failing to report in to the City Police. This resulted in 3 additional charged of breach of release orders. Mr. Gregoire will appear in bail court this morning. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to thank those citizens who called in information regarding the suspicious activity of the male during this incident.


Motor Vehicle Collision

Just before 4:30 am this morning City Police attended in the area of Caesar Road and Angelina Avenue for a single car motor vehicle collision involving an impaired driver. It is alleged that a van operated by 20-year old Adrian Simpson of 37 Caesar Road was traveling eastbound on Caesar Road when he drove off the roadway, over the curb, over a maple tree, through a cedar hedge, through a green house and across a large garden in the rear of a residence in the 100 block of Angelina. The driver than reversed the vehicle and ran into the hedge and became stuck. Damage to the van is described as light. During the investigation officers also learned that the accused had taken the van without the owners consent. Mr. Simpson has been charged with one count of impaired driving, one count of consume over the legal limit, and one count of take motor vehicle without owners consent. He will appear in court on October 3rd.

Break and Enter

Yesterday morning City Police received a report of a break and enter to a garage in the 800 block of Fourth Line East. Sometime in the last 2 weeks entry was gained, it is unknown at this time what was taken.
Around 4:13 am this morning a male was observed trying to break into a garage in the 100 block of Grosvenor Avenue. The male left the area and police were called. The male is described as being 5’8” or 5’9” tall, Caucasian, wearing long grey pants, a grey jacket and a ball cap. Entry was not gained.

Driver Charged with Not turning Safely

Just after 5 pm last night Traffic Services attend at Black Road and MacDonald Avenue for a motor vehicle collision with injuries. A car operated by 26-year old Wayne Mador of 163 Parkland Crescent was northbound on Black Road in the turning lane to turn onto MacDonald Avenue. A car operated by 18-year old Amanda Goericke of 379 Lake Street was traveling southbound on Black Road in the curb lane. An unknown vehicle, which was also traveling southbound on Black Road in the second lane, stopped to allow the Mador vehicle to turn onto MacDonald Avenue. The Mador vehicle and the Goericke vehicle collided. Both vehicles received severe damage. Miss Goericke and her 23-year old passenger James Sharpe of 92 Murphy Street were taken by ambulance to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Mador received non-life threatening injuries but did not require medical treatment at the time of the incident. Mr. Mador has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with one count of turn-not in safety.
