The week of October 23rd to 29th is Safe Crossing Week 2006, which was launched by Safe Kids Canada and the Canadian National (CN) Railway. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has been working jointly with the Canadian National Railway Police to educate the public on railway safety for the last two years.

Here are some safety tips for motorists:

- Never race a train to the crossing - even in a tie, you lose.
- Do not get trapped on the tracks. Only proceed through a highway/railway crossing if you are sure you can completely clear the crossing without stopping. Remember, the train is three feet wider than the tracks on both sides.
- ALWAYS EXPECT A TRAIN! Trains do not follow set schedules.
- Do not be fooled by the optical illusion - the train you see is closer and faster moving than you think. If you see a train approaching, wait for it to go by before you proceed across the tracks.

Motorists need to be aware that there are a number of charges under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario that apply to railways. The include:

- Careless driving which is a fine of $260 and 6 demerit points.
- Driver of public vehicle or school bus fail to stop at railway crossing carries a fine of $90 and 5 demerit points.
- Drive through, around or under railway barrier carries a fine of $90 and 3 demerit points.
- U-turn on or within 30 metres of a railway crossing carries a fine of $90 and 2 demerit points.

Remember that trains cannot stop quickly even when moving slow. Cross bucks and drop down gates are a railway crossing to help ensure your safety. Obey the rules of the road and arrive home safely.
