Reminder

Old Man Winter is just around the corner and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists to make sure they are ready for winter driving. Here are some things to check on your vehicle to ensure that you have a safe drive:

1) Check the battery. Make sure you have a fully charged battery.

2) Regularly check that all lights are functioning properly and that headlights are properly aimed.

3) Have your brakes checked, and if needed, serviced.

4) Check the tires and tire pressure at least once a month when the tires are cold. Remember that air pressure decreases in cold weather. Keep in mind that traction is the key to good movement, turning and stopping on wet surfaces.

5) Make sure your wipers are in good condition and fill up on winter washer fluid. Blades that streak should be replaced.

Also keep in mind that you should give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination due to the road conditions.
You should also keep an emergency survival kit in your vehicle, especially if you are heading out of town or travel along the highway to get back and forth to work. You should have first aid supplies, a blanket-the small survival ones are best, instant cold packs, a shovel, booster cables, sand or kitty litter for traction and extra clothing and footwear.

For in town or highway travel always consider the road conditions and visibility. Adjust your speed accordingly and allow yourself a longer stopping distance.
