ARRESTED ON FRAUD CHARGES
23-year-old Jamie Tubman of 4 Pinewood Walk, Marathon, was arrested yesterday morning on a number of fraud-related charges. The offences stem from a 2-month period this summer and involve writing cheques with insufficient funds in the bank account.
Mr. Tubman was also on a release document advising he was to be residing in Marathon when he has actually been staying at an address in the Sault. When Mr. Tubman was arrested, he fled on foot from the officers and was apprehended a short time later.
The accused has been charged with 5 count of false pretences, 5 counts of uttering a forged document, one count of breach of a release document and one count of escape custody. He will appear in bail court today.
DRIVER CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED
Shortly before 2 am this morning officers were called to a single motor vehicle accident involving an impaired driver. A car driven by the accused was travelling eastbound on Trunk Road when the car hit the curb, struck a utility pole, and continued along the curb until it came to a stop in front of a residence in the 700 block of Trunk Road.
Irene Burch, age 42, of 99 Kerr Drive has been charged with one count of impaired driving and one count of failing to provide a breath sample. She will appear in court on September 13th.
CAR VS. BICYCLE
Yesterday during the noon hour, city police went to the intersection of Queen Street East and Tancred Street for an accident involving a bicycle and a car.
33-year old Gary Crossman of 105-441 Queen Street West was operating his bike westbound on Queen.
26-year old Joseph Fiore of 13 Northridge Road was southbound on Tancred Street in his pickup truck when he stopped at the intersection but then proceeded through, striking Mr. Crossman. Neither driver required medical treatment at the time.
Mr. Fiore has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with one count of failing to yield to traffic on a through highway.
CAUGHT BREAKING INTO CARS
An alert citizen called the Police shortly after 5 am this morning to report youths were going through cars in the Manitou Park neighbourhood. Upon arrival they noted a youth trying to get into a vehicle. The owner of this car had locked it so the thief did not gain entry.
The youth was discovered to be on a probation order with a number of terms. The 15-year old has been charged with one count of attempted theft, one count of breach of probation and one count of trespass by night. The youth has a court date of September 14th.
SAFETY TIPS
Each Long Weekend we all hear of tragedies that could have been avoided. Homes are broken into while their owners are away, motorists are killed or injured in motor vehicle collisions or vacations are ruined when vehicles are entered and the owner’s belongings are taken. Many of these tragedies could be avoided with some careful planning.
GOING AWAY
·Make your home appears occupied when you go out.
·Leave lights on and the radio playing.
·Keep your garage door closed and locked.
·Use timing devices to turn inside lights on and off.
·If you will be gone several days, arrange to have the mail and papers stopped or picked up.
·Inform your trusted neighbours you will be away and ask them to keep an eye on you residence.
·Half of all home burglaries occur during the day when alert neighbors could spot and report the thieves.
