House fire: The Sault Ste Marie Police and Fire Services are presently on the scene of a house fire at 4 Labelle Ave. The fire call was received at approx 4:30 am.

The Sault Ste Marie Police and Fire Services are presently on the scene of a house fire at 4 Labelle Ave. The fire call was received at approx 4:30 am. Upon arrival of the fire department the house was said to be totally engulfed in flames. No one has been reported injured. At this time the Sault Ste Marie Police and Fire Services are requesting that the public avoid the area.

Male arrested for impaired driving and possession of a substance:

At approx. 10:15 pm last night city police officers stopped a vehicle on John St. after observing it driving erratically. Upon speaking to the driver it was observed that he was under the influence of alcohol and he was subsequently arrested for impaired driving. Upon searching the accused it is alleged that he had a small quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine. The accused, 38-year-old Donald Turner of 250 Beverly St is charged with one count of impaired driving, one count of drive over 80 mgs and one count of possession of a substance. He will be appearing in court on Aug17th at 9:00 am.

Male arrested for impaired driving and fail to remain:
Last night at approx.8:00 pm city police were called to Queen St. E. and Pine St. regarding a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival officers were informed that one of the vehicles had left the scene. After a short search officers located the vehicle and driver. The suspected driver, 27-year-old Jeffery Rinaldi, of 76 Pawating Pl. was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Mr. Rinaldi was arrested and charged with one count of impaired riving, one count of drive over 80 mgs and one count of fail to remain at the scene of a collision. He will be appearing in court on Aug 17th at 9:00 am.

Male arrested for theft:

Yesterday at approx. 2:25 pm city police attended at Rome’s Independent Grocers regarding a shoplifter. Upon arrival of police store security informed the officer that they had arrested a male for theft under $ 5,000. It is alleged that the accused, Jon Hyyrylainen, age 19, of 107 Grandriver Cres., stole a quantity of chocolate bars. Mr. Hyyrylainen is charged with one count of theft under $ 5,000. He will be appearing in court on Aug 17th at 9:00 am.

Property Crimes:

Break and enter:


Break-ins were reported to the following locations:
The 400 block of Borden Ave – liquor reported stolen.
55 Cedar St – Robert Hooey Contractors was broken in to – power tools were stolen.
An attempted was made to break in to a garage in the 300 block of Borden Ave.

Theft:
A bicycle was stolen from a residence in the 300 block of Borden Ave.

Mischief:
A vehicle was damaged in the 800 block of Goulais Ave.

Arson:

At approx 9:30 pm last night the Sault Ste Marie Police and Fire Services were called out to attend at Birchwood Park regarding a fire. Upon arrival fire fighters and officers discovered that the park play equipment had been set on fire. Several youths were seen leaving the area just before the fire was called in. Police would like the public’s assistance in locating the persons responsible for this offence.
