Theft of garden lights was reported from an address on Carufel Ave.

At 12:35 hours officers responded to a call for assistance to the Sault Ste. Marie Casino for a lost elderly male from outside the city who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.  All available officers attended the area and the male was located a short time later in good health.  Thank you to the cab companies, Station Mall Security and other citizens who assisted in the successful search.

August Intersection Enforcement

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service has dedicated August as Intersection Control month and as such officers from Patrol and Traffic Services will be conducting enforcement at intersections throughout the city.  Officers will be checking for drivers not stopping for red lights, yellow lights, improper turns, and drivers talking and holding cell phones at intersections.

Some of the intersection related fines that could be issued to drivers are:

Red Light – Fail to Stop - $325 and 3 demerit points

Fail to yield to pedestrian- $180 and 3 demerit points

Green Arrow – Fail to Proceed as directed $110 and 3 demerit points

Drive hand held communication device- $155.

The intersections listed have been identified as the top 20 for recent collision statistics and as such Officers will be giving those locations extra attention. The intersections in order of greatest number of collisions, are as follows:

On 02 August 2012 at approximately 4:30 p.m. officers responded to a sexual assault complaint regarding a child under 14 years.  It is alleged that the accused, 79 year old Antonio Caputo of 218 Sydenham Road, sexually assaulted a female child by kissing her and touching her.  He has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.  He will appear in court on 10 September 2012.

At 2:00 a.m. officers located a missing 16 year old from Sudbury who is being held on an order for committal on several charges from Sudbury.

On the 3Aug12 at approximately 0230 hours officers responded to a home invasion robbery on Birkshire Place.  It is reported that a female came to the door of a residence on Birkshire Place and asked to used the phone stating she had ran out of gas. After the female entered the home two males followed her inside and brandished what appeared to be pepper spray. One of the males held the victim against the wall asking for gold and money. The victim was led around the home by this male. The suspects took valuables from the residence including jewelry and cash.  The three gold rings stolen are described as a Dalhousie University ring with a red stone and the letter "D", a University of New Brunswick school ring from 1978 with the word "Forestry" on it and the initials "BSCF" as well as a gold ring with an evergreen tree on it.

The female was described as approximately 5'3" with short dark hair, slim build, no glasses wearing a white hoodie with a pattern on it. The male that held the complainant was approximately 6' tall, medium build approximately 175 lbs. scruffy looking with light brown hair wearing a dark sweater. The other male was over 6' tall, stocky build, over 200 lbs. with short brown hair and was wearing loose/baggy clothing. Both males had everything partially covered except for their hands. After going through the home the males put the victim in the cold room in the basement and took his phone so he could not call the police. The victim was able to locate a phone and called the police after he heard them leave.
