Update On Double Murder
Officers from several divisions within the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services continue to work on the double homicide that was discovered on April 20th just after 4 am. Officers at that time discovered the bodies of 40-year old Melody Burtis and her 8-year son Harley Baxter-Burtis in a vehicle in the Greenwood Cemetery. Officers arrested 33-year old Albert Ouimet in the cemetery as well.
Officers have established that the victims and the accused were known to each other. The public can be reassured that this tragic situation is not an indiscriminate act of violence and as a result there is no present concern for community safety.
Double Homicide
Officers from Investigation Services and Forensic Services are continuing to work on the double homicide that was discovered early yesterday morning. 33-year old Albert Francis Ouimet of no fixed address will appear in bail court this morning at 10 am. He has been charged with two counts of murder, one count of impaired driving and one count of breach of probation. Next of kin was notified late yesterday. The victims of yesterday’s homicide have been identified as 40-year old Melody Burtis and her 8-year old son Harley Baxter-Burtis, both of Sault Ste. Marie.
Disturbance Call Leads To Arrest
25-year old Shawn Dunlop of no fixed address was arrested last evening and charged with one count of personation and one count of breach of a release order. Officers attended at a downtown address last night for a disturbance call. During the course of their investigation officers spoke to the accused, who allegedly provided them with a different name. Officers were able to confirm that at the accused was indeed Mr. Dunlop and he was subsequently arrested. Officers also learned that the accused was on a release order with conditions including notify change of address. He will appear in bail court this morning.
Impaired Driving
Last evening just before 10 pm Custom Officers detained 48-year old Michael Doherty of 126 Albert Street West after he allegedly was operating a motor vehicle while impaired. City Police were called and the accused was subsequently charged with one count of consume over the legal limit. He will appear in court on May 29th.
Bike Theft At Canadian Tire
Canadian Tire employees arrested a 16-year old youth last evening after it is alleged the youth removed a bike from the bike rack at the store and attempted to leave the store with it. City Police attended and the accused was arrested and charged with one count of theft under $5,000. The youth will appear in court on May 23rd.
Man Arrested Over Cab Ride
27-year old Michael Dupuis of 11 Riverview Avenue was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with one count of transportation fraud. It is alleged that the accused took a cab ride and was then unable to pay the fare. The accused will appear in court on May 29th.
