Sault Ste. Marie Police say a tip from the public led to impaired driving charges early Monday morning.

Just after midnight, a 911 dispatcher was told someone drove off in their vehicle after drinking a lot of alcohol at a Lake Street business.

After an extensive search, officers tracked down a suspect vehicle.

“Officers saw the vehicle drive across a centre median on Wellington Street East near Trunk Road before noticeably overcorrecting by swerving in the opposite direction,” police said in a news release.

After pulling over the vehicle, officers suspected the driver was impaired by alcohol. They allege that multiple breath samples registered over the legal limit.

Rolland Karalash, 37, has been charged with operation while impaired (drug and/or alcohol) and operation while impaired (blood alcohol concentration 80+).

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on March 11, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Karalash is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
