Driver found sleeping behind the wheel charged with impaired: Police

Police have charged 39-year-old Daniel Caruso after officers responded to citizen reports regarding a possible impaired driver on Saturday evening.

A news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that the accused was discovered asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle that was parked in a St. Georges Avenue parking lot.

Full text of the news release follows:

On Sept. 11, 2021, officers with Patrol Services charged 39-year-old Daniel Caruso with impaired driving – alcohol and/or drugs.

Around 8:25 p.m. officers responded to reports of a possible impaired driver in the area of St. Georges Avenue.

Officers located the vehicle matching the description of the report parked and running in a parking lot in the 300 block of St. Georges Avenue.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers observed the accused asleep behind the wheel of the running vehicle.

Officers were able to wake him up and upon speaking with him developed grounds to believe his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.

He was arrested and later provided breath samples into an approved device, registering fail results.

He is charged with impaired driving – alcohol and/or drugs and impaired driving – blood alcohol concentration (80+).

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 1, 2021.
