Police standoff ends as search warrant executed (update)

Pine Street reopened after being closed for about two hours as part of police activity

Police say three of their units were involved in executing a search warrant Wednesday at around 6 p.m. that saw armed officers on the scene in tactical gear.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police said the Crime Suppression Unit, the Drug Enforcement Unit, and its Emergency Services Unit executed the warrant at a residence in 800 block of Pine Street.

Multiple officers from the BATT (ballistic armoured tactical transport) using an armoured vehicle were part of the response.

At least five people were taken to a van in handcuffs by police. It appears they were questioned and then released.

Officers from the forensics unit started going through the house around 7:15 p.m.

The police armoured unit left the scene around that time.

Shortly after 8 p.m., police issued a news release stating Pine Street had reopened, after being closed between Passmore Road and Willoughby Street for about two hours.

"The scene was secured and traffic was diverted while the search warrant was executed. Officers have cleared the area and traffic is now flowing normally in the area," the release states, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
