A bicycle track left behind in the snow led Sault Police to a break-and-enter suspect early Sunday morning.

At around 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 21, officers were dispatched to a business in the 300 block of Second Line West to respond to an alarm.

“Upon arrival, officers found a broken window and a bicycle trail in the snow leading away from the business,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “No one was in the business.”

Police say officers followed the bike trail and eventually located a suspect, who was arrested.

A subsequent search turned up approximately $250 worth of stolen goods and a hammer, police allege.

Gerald Burns, 53, is charged with:

  • Break and Enter – Commit Indictable Offence
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Under $5,000
  • Possession of Break In Instruments
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order – Other Than to Attend Court

The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Burns is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
