Arrest made in vehicle theft investigation

Police have charged Jean Paul Leonard with theft after it is alleged he failed to return the victim's vehicle.

The victim stated they had given the accused consent to use the vehicle for a short time," states a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. "However, when they woke up in the morning the vehicle was missing."

On Aug. 8, 2021, officers with Patrol Services charged 62-year-old Jean Paul Leonard with motor vehicle theft.

Around 7:15 a.m., officers received a call from a victim stating their vehicle was missing from their residence in the 200 block of Old Garden River Road. The victim stated they had given the accused consent to use the vehicle for a short time. However, when they woke up in the morning the vehicle was missing.

An investigation began and attempts to locate the accused were unsuccessful. Officers requested a warrant and a warrant was issued for the accused.

Around 4:50 p.m., officers were called to the 200 block of Old Garden River Road as the accused had returned to the residence. Upon arrival officers located the accused and he was arrested.

He is charged with motor vehicle theft and breach of probation by failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 27, 2021.
