Arrest made after cyclists struck by vehicle on John Street

19-year-old faces impaired driving, dangerous operation charges

Police have charged 19-year-old Evan Grisdale with a number of offences after two cyclists were struck by a vehicle on John Street on the evening of Oct. 30. Both victims were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that the accused was located a short time later on Wellington Street East. Responding officers believed his ability to drive was impaired by alcohol.

On Oct. 31, 2021 officers with Patrol Services charged 19-year-old Evan Grisdale with dangerous operation.

Around 10:44 p.m. on Oct. 30, 2021, officers responded to a call of two cyclists being struck by a vehicle in the 500 block of John Street. Upon arrival officers found two men suffering from injuries. EMS attended and they were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Around 12:07 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2021, officers responded to a call of a possible impaired driver in the 1200 block of Wellington Street East. Upon arrival, officers observed a parked vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the collision on John Street. Upon speaking with the accused officers developed grounds to believe his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by alcohol. He was arrested and later refused to provide breathe samples into an approved device.

Further investigation revealed the accused was operating the vehicle without insurance.

He is charged with:
    •    dangerous operation x2
    •    impaired driving – alcohol and/or drug
    •    fail to comply with a demand
    •    failure to stop after accident
    •    failure to remain at scene of collision under HTA
    •    operation of a motor vehicle without insurance under HTA

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 29, 2021.
