'Active police scene' closes portion of Wellington East (update)

Update 2:

Sault Police have confirmed the four people taken into custody yesterday in the area of Wellington Street East and Elgin Street have been released unconditionally.

In a press release issued today, police say they developed grounds to believe a firearm was discharged in the area. Four people were taken into custody.

The incident, which drew in a heavy police presence, closed portion of Elgin Street and part of Wellington Street East yesterday afternoon.

Officers say they later executed a search warrant of the residence in the area and no firearm was located and as a result, the four accused were released.

The investigation is ongoing.

Update

Sault Police Corporate Communications Manager Lincoln Louttit advises that the incident has now been resolved and four people have been taken into custody.

Officers remain at the scene investigating.

A heavy police presence has been reported in the area of Wellington Street East and Elgin Street.

A portion of Elgin Street is currently closed to traffic between Wellington Street East and Grace Street.

Police have also blocked part of Wellington Street East near Elgin Street.

"At this time, we want the public to know officers are involved at an active scene in the 300 block of Wellington Street East," Sault Police Corporate Communications Manager Lincoln Louttit told SooToday.

"The public is advised to avoid the area. Further details will be released as it becomes available."
